Block categories: how Blockenberg groups 600+ blocks
Categories are how you browse the library in the inserter and in these docs. They are registered in PHP, not invented in the documentation generator.
Get Blockenberg
Blockenberg is a Gutenberg block library. These features are plugin-wide editor tools, not Elementor extensions.
What it actually does
Categories prepended (in inserter order after reverse-unshift): General (blockenberg), Layout & Structure (bkbg-layout), Content & Typography (bkbg-content), Media & Images (bkbg-media), Marketing & Conversion (bkbg-marketing), Business & Services (bkbg-business), Blog & Editorial (bkbg-blog), Interactive & Games (bkbg-interactive), Charts & Data (bkbg-charts), Calculators & Tools (bkbg-calculators), Effects & Animation (bkbg-effects), Developer Tools (bkbg-dev).
Each block’s block.json category field must match one of those slugs. Docs category pages map those slugs to human names.
The Block Manager dashboard reuses the same labels and dashicons so enable/disable grouping matches the inserter.
Where it lives in WordPress
In the editor, open the block inserter ( + ) and browse the Blockenberg groups. Registration: block_categories_all in blockenberg.php. Dashboard labels: bkbg_get_category_labels() in admin-dashboard.php.
How to use it
- Open the inserter. Edit a page, click +.
- Scan Blockenberg groups. They sit at the top because the plugin unshifts them.
- Search by name if you know it. Faster than browsing 600+ blocks.
- Disable whole groups you never use. Block Manager still toggles per block, not per category, but grouping helps you find them.
Controls and behavior
| Piece | What the plugin does |
|---|---|
| block.json category | Must be a bkbg-* slug or blockenberg. |
| block_categories_all | Registers the twelve groups. |
| Dashboard labels | Human names + dashicons for the manager UI. |
When this is the right tool
- Finding a chart block without knowing its slug.
- Training a client: “look under Marketing & Conversion.”
Notes from the code
Docs skip inner row/column blocks that declare a parent in block.json so the library lists insertable blocks only. blockenberg.com.
FAQ
Why are there two “layout” ideas?
Inserter category bkbg-layout vs the Advanced-tab layout system. One is grouping; the other is CSS attributes.
Can I hide a category?
Not as a group toggle. Disable each block in that group via Block Manager.
Other plugin features
Block Manager: enable and disable Gutenberg blocks
A wp-admin dashboard that stores disabled block names in blockenberg_disabled_blocks and skips those folders during register_block_type and asset registration.
Inspector tabs: General vs Advanced on every Blockenberg block
A BlockEdit higher-order component (inspector-tabs.js) injects General / Advanced tabs on all blockenberg/* blocks and registers shared layout attributes.
Layout system: shared spacing and background CSS for every block
Server-registered bkbg* attributes and a render_block filter that prints desktop inline CSS plus tablet/mobile media queries. layout.css is shared by section/row/column.
Typography control: a shared font popover and Google Fonts loader
window.bkbgTypographyControl is a reusable popover. On the front, blockenberg.php scans *Typo / typo* attributes for family and enqueues Google Fonts CSS2 URLs (skipping system fonts).
Icon picker: one control for Dashicons, SVG, and images
window.bkbgIconPicker exposes IconPickerControl, editor/save builders, and a frontend DOM builder. Icon types include Dashicons, bundled SVG paths, and media uploads.
